For the past 30 years the Institut Van Gogh has devoted itself to preserving the spirit and soul of Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise. Following the restoration and opening to the public in 1993* of Van Gogh’s famous room no.5 in the Auberge Ravoux (known as the « House of Van Gogh »), the Institut has made a significant contribution to preserving the memory of the painter via numerous educational activities and heritage protection exercises in Auvers.
Today, in partnership with the municipality of Auvers-sur-Oise, the Institut Van Gogh is committing itself to preserving the tombs of the Van Gogh brothers in the cemetery of Auvers-sur-Oise, which is visited by more than 250,000 ‘pilgrims’ per year. This is the « Become a Patron of Vincent and Theo van Gogh » campaign.
With a view to maximizing publicity for this campaign and recruiting sponsors, patrons and donors, the Institut Van Gogh is organizing a competition for students in art colleges, art lovers and children : #PaintForVanGogh. The competition starts on 20 May 2017 – symbolically on the anniversary date of Van Gogh’s arrival in Auvers-sur- Oise – and closes at the end of September.
The competition is aimed at the community of artists devoted to art and art history and will take place via the medium of Instagram, the preferred platform of this hyper-connected sector of society. It is also a way of demonstrating the intergenerational nature of the project from an inspiring past-present perspective.
The requirement is the following: All participants are to create an original work paying homage to Van Gogh and to post it on Instagram with the #PaintForVanGogh. The support for the artwork is a sheet of paper, ‘landscape’ format (i.e. wider than high). This is the format that Van Gogh preferred in Auvers: double square (33 by 66 cms) or modern A3.
The competition is open to all ! The three budding artists receiving the most ‘likes’ will be promoted internationally; Their entries will also be exhibited in Auvers-sur-Oise in March 2018, before being sold by auction on 20 May 2018. Discover our three awards :

Depuis 30 ans, l’Institut Van Gogh se mobilise pour préserver l’âme et l’esprit de Vincent van Gogh à Auvers-sur-Oise. Après la réhabilitation et l’ouverture au public en 1993 de la célèbre chambre n°5 de Van Gogh à l’Auberge Ravoux (dite « Maison de Van Gogh »), l’Institut a contribué de manière significative à la protection de la mémoire du peintre à travers de nombreuses actions éducatives et de conservation du patrimoine auversois.
Aujourd’hui, l’Institut Van Gogh se mobilise pour préserver les tombes des frères Van Gogh et le cimetière d’Auvers-sur-Oise qui reçoit chaque année plus de 250 000 visiteurs. C’est l’opération « Devenez mécène de Vincent et Theo van Gogh».
Afin de promouvoir cette opération, l’Institut Van Gogh met en place un concours destiné au Grand Public, aux enfants et aux étudiants en école d’art du 20 mai 2017 au 30 septembre 2017.
C’est le concours #PaintForVanGogh, Les artistes mécènes de Vincent et Theo van Gogh
Destiné à une communauté de passionnés par l’art et son histoire, ce concours prendra place sur Instagram : les artistes doivent créer une œuvre originale rendant hommage au peintre et la publier en mentionnant le compte Instagram de l’Institut Van Gogh et le hashtag #PaintForVanGogh. Nous récompensons les artistes avec trois prix : le Prix Grand Public, le Prix Junior et le Prix dédié aux étudiants aux écoles d’art. Les trois artistes en herbe recevant le plus de likes bénéficieront d’un plan de promotion international comme détaillé sur la présentation jointe. Leurs œuvres seront par ailleurs exposées en mars 2018 à Auvers-sur-Oise, avant d’être mises aux enchères le 20 mai 2018. Les jeunes artistes contribueront ainsi financièrement à l’opération « Devenez mécène de Vincent et Theo van Gogh ». En souvenir de leur participation, ils recevront la clef de la Chambre Van Gogh et une invitation pour un déjeuner à la table Van Gogh à l’Auberge Ravoux.
De manière symbolique le concours débute le jour anniversaire de l’arrivée de Van Gogh à Auvers-sur-Oise (et se termine quatre mois plus tard). Rappelons qu’à Auvers-sur-Oise, le peintre a réalisé à Auvers près de 80 œuvres dont certaines comptent parmi les plus marquantes (Champ de blé aux corbeaux, Portrait du Dr Gachet, L’Eglise d’Auvers, etc.).
